Founders Story
THE BEGINNING
My journey into the beauty industry started in a time where some might call crazy “IN THE HEIGHT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC”. I’ve always had a love interest with nails. Whenever I would get them done it was never good enough. I was always fascinated with how they were done but I was never afforded that opportunity. Fast forward to my early 30’s I was gifted a wax kit and not a clue how use it and in that moment I was encouraged to take a course in waxing which I ventured into and got certified by Fashion Meets Face.
I followed up with courses in acrylic nails, pedicures and even makeup because if you know me I have a makeup obsession so why not. Thereafter I would start doing pedicures on family members in my mom’s gallery just to gain the experience. I soon began telling my coworkers about my little “side hustle” so too speak, yes I juggled a full time job too. I decided to put some effort into making this a business and hence SagaLady Beauty was created.
THE JOURNEY
I knew very early on into the business that I wanted to stand out and be unique. Once I created my IG handle I reached out to Decadentdelightstt a baker who specialises in customized cookies. I wanted to tell my 3 clients thank you and gain new ones. Little did I know reaching out to her would change my life forever and a new friendship would blossom. Thank you Yash. Love you forever hun. She encouraged me to rent a little spot as she was fearful for my safety as a female doing house calls and by this time COVID was on the rise like a wildfire. I was hesitant at first because I literally had 3 clients and about 5 polishes
HICCUP #1
Then a blessing and a curse happened that’s what I thought. Little did I know it was my blessing in disguise. I was sent on 21 days quarantine. I lived on the internet. Social media was my best friend. It was on Facebook and I discovered a little hidden jem in the heart of Curepe called Caribbean Trim Barbershop and Salon and I kid you not as soon as the quarantine was lifted I went to work and on my lunch break got a drop to Curepe where I secured a pedi station that was for rent. I was elated.
HICCUP #2
I was now a pedicurist and everything seemed to be going good but I ended up on another quarantine. Yes I was in charge of being home. Then I received a text message the contents of which almost made me pass out. The young lady that was running the salon area was closing down and taking her pedi station, furniture etc. So I would need to move or make my own arrangements with the landlord. I say God why me? I was just getting settled in and building a clientele. Eventually I was able to make an arrangement with the landlord not knowing how I was going to pay for anything. I was left with and empty shell.
THE STORM CONTINUED
The country went into total lockdown. No revenue, no furniture, no client’s. WHAT TO DO? Keep pushing. I decided to do an entire makeover and remodel because like I said I saw it as a hidden jem. You should know by now my journey are like the roads in Trinidad. Just keeping it real. And with that being said I ended up on quarantine a third time. Yes they were calling me the quarantine queen. I began working on projects from behind the scenes. Long story short I was scammed thousands of dollars for custom furniture during lockdown at home and so the saga continued but I wasn’t giving up. I was determined.
LEAP OF FAITH
One day I looked up in the sky and I said God what is this? I said if you are giving this to me then you have to help me pay for it because I can’t do this alone. I will help myself but you have to be there with me true thick and thin.
LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
Fast forward the entire salon got a much needed facelift just in time when the country was lifting it’s restrictions. This is where my nail journey career began with acrylic. Shortly thereafter I discovered my love for Gel Extensions. Self taught in this field I was soon able to grow a clientele and convert my clients into Gel X Lovers.
THE STORM CONTINUED
I’ve been selling from the tender age of 5 so when my client Diana encouraged me to start selling Cuticle Oil pens to my clients she fuelled my spirit and from there the brand kept expanding with SLB products.
